OUR HORSES

MEET OUR HORSES

We are pretty lucky to have such a beautiful team of horses who are all a part of our family. We currently have over 40 horses who are a part of our herd here at Korohe Horse Treks, 15 of which are our very special trekking horses who are part of our working team. The cool thing about our horses is that nearly all of them have grown up locally! Most of them are Waimarino Wild Horses, which through all individual stories of their own, have ended up in our herd and family. Check out the cutest headshots below of our current team!

  • MAUI

Maui, the demi-god, has been with us for about 5 years now. This 12 year old boy is amazing with small children or if you want to rock your world and go really really fast! Maui absolutely LOVES the river and water, so is perfect on our swimming with the horses ride. His beautiful coloured markings and his sweet gentle nature make him a sure favourite among guests.

  • TE KARU

Te Karu is named after his eye. Te Karu was found on his own and with an injury down his face from an unknown cause out in the wild. We helped him heal and recover and fortunately, while it may look like his blue eye might be blind, he still has vision in it. Since then, he has become a part of our herd and an integral part of our trekking team. Nicknamed TK, which is easier for children to remember, he is perfect as a beginner riders horse or for children to explore riding on their own off the lead-rein.

  • HARLEM

Our gentle giant, Harlem, has a heart of gold and will always look after his rider to the best of his abilities. Harlem walked into our paddock a few years back and instantly won our hearts. Harlem has a heart of gold!

  • MOANA

Moana is a sassy horse who we absolutely adore! She came to us to get started with her training and never left. She is only about 8 years old and can do a whole array of cool things beyond just trekking. Moana is currently on maternity leave with her foal, but you will sometimes see her out on the trail teaming up with one of our guides and her foal tagging along for the ride.

  • UIRA

Tama-te-Uira is the God of Lightning! Uria is a local rescue horse who we have given a beautiful second lease on life here with our family. Uria is perfect for any rider, you really could put anyone on him and he will just look after them. He is our number one choice for fast rides because after all, he is the God of Lightning - but not only this, he will look after you if you are nervous about getting back in the saddle or going fast in big open spaces. Uira is about 13 years old now and his beautiful palomino colour and long blonde mane really makes him stand out from the herd.

  • HAMMER

If you’ve visited us out at Korohe Horse Treks then it is likely you’ve met Hammer! Hammer is our oldest member of the team, aged at over 30 years old now. He has always been our trusty go-to for children to ride due to his kind and gentle nature. Nearly everyone we know has ridden Hammer at one point or another. He is now newly retired and living his best life on the farm with us. He is often the first horse you will see when you arrive and is the kindest welcome party you could imagine.

  • MĀRŪ

Mārū is named after his nature, his name meaning gentle and easy. He is the newest and youngest in our team and has proven himself to be very valuable very quickly on our treks. He has a beautiful nature and is great on fast rides with experienced riders as well as out walking treks with beginner riders.

  • TAJ

Taj is not one of our usual bush ponies, but was once a wild Kaimanawa Heritage Horse. This 17 year old boy has only been with us for the last couple years has insisted on integrating himself into our trekking herd. Taj can have a mind of his own and is sure to give you an adventure on your ride. Plus, Taj is also one of our best swimmers and LOVES the water! His favourite trek would 100% be the swim ride in the summer where he can cool off in the deepest parts of the river.

  • TURANGI

Turangi is a local Korohe Horse and has been aptly named after this. Turangi is our smallest guest trekking horse, but can hold his weight in gold! He absolutely LOVES food and is a bit of a fatty, so you will often see him out on the trail for his daily workout. Turangi is John & Sammii’s daughters horse who she competes with at local sports days and if he’s not our on the trail or at a local sports day, you’ll see him hanging around his best friend Moana and being her foals trusty baby sitter for the day.

  • RUAUMOKO

Ruaumoko has been in our lives for a few years now, but has been living his life out in the wild for the last couple of years, enjoying his life as a bush pony. He has recently come back home and joined our trekking team, which is pretty exciting! He is 14 years old and a beautiful, big and kind horse. He is pretty awesome, if we do say so ourselves!

  • THE BRO

The name says it all! The bro just wants to hang out and be your mate. He’s the first to greet you in the morning waiting for you to arrive at the yard. The Bro is one of our biggest & fastest horses and is John’s ‘go-to’ horse for competition days.

  • BABY SHARK

Baby Shark has been with us for only a short amount of time and is one of the youngest in our team, at only 4 years old. His mum was in foal when she came into care from the wild, so while he was born in captivity he is still very much a bush pony. Baby Shark has been named surprisingly well, with one of his eyes being blue and the other one brown and really fitting because he is a great swimmer! He is perfect for our swim rides and you will often see our guides teaming up with him on these rides.
